"Write your truth and celebrate your mixed-race identity."
Hello & Welcome
Growing up, did you ever find resources that spoke to your experience as a mixed-race person? I know I didn’t.
As a Filipina African American, I spent my childhood straddling two worlds—too much of one, never enough of the other. I was constantly asked, “What are you?” as if my identity could be reduced to a simple explanation. Being mixed-race often felt like trying to fit into a box that was too small, and I couldn’t help but wonder: How much easier would my journey have been if I had seen myself reflected in the books, workbooks, or stories around me?
There were hardly any resources, stories, or guidance in libraries and bookstores that spoke to my unique experience. I never found anything that helped me understand the complexities of being both Filipino and African American—the beauty and the struggle of living in between. I often found myself searching for a space where I truly belonged, but it felt like there was nothing for someone like me.
Now, imagine if there had been workbooks, journals, and stories designed specifically for mixed-race people. What if I could have turned to something that celebrated my identity, rather than made me feel like I didn’t belong anywhere? How different would my journey have been if I had had the tools to reflect, embrace, and understand my identity from a young age?
This is the very reason Deep Colors exists today.
Not just as a brand, but as a movement—one where we no longer shrink or apologize for the fullness of who we are. We’re not puzzles to be solved or identities to be simplified. We are a blend of contradictions, untold histories, and futures yet to be written. We are everything at once, and every part of us deserves to be celebrated, not explained away.
Through these journals, eBooks, and workbooks, I hope to offer what I never had growing up—tools for empowerment, healing, and discovering the strength in our complexity. These resources aren’t just for individuals. They are opportunities for parents, kids, and adults to come together and bond over shared experiences, reflection, and growth. Whether you’re navigating your roots, facing society's expectations, or simply looking for a place to reflect, these resources create spaces for meaningful conversations and deeper connections within families.
When we embrace our diverse identities and share our stories, we build stronger relationships and understanding. These moments of reflection can help parents and children support each other, especially when navigating the complexities of mixed-race identity.
You are not fragmented. You are whole—an intricate tapestry of history, heritage, and future. You are not too much or too little—you are exactly as you’re meant to be.
Let’s take up space, tell our stories, and create something that resonates deeply within us. Together.
